For local businesses, phone calls are often the most valuable leads, and the hardest to attribute. Someone clicks a Facebook ad, browses your site and calls. Without call tracking, that call shows up as "direct" or not at all, and the ad gets no credit. GoHighLevel call tracking with number pools fixes this by showing each visitor a tracking number and recording where they came from. An October 2026 update made the source labels much more precise.
Sources: HighLevel changelog entries on ad platform labels for number pool calls and ringing multiple users.
A number pool is a set of tracking phone numbers. A script on your website swaps your displayed phone number for one from the pool, unique to each visitor session. When the visitor calls, GoHighLevel knows which session, and therefore which source, landing page and campaign, produced the call. The call is forwarded to your business line as normal.
Before | After |
|---|---|
Many Facebook ad calls showed as "Facebook" or "Direct" | Facebook ad calls are labelled "Facebook Paid" |
Other ad platforms often unclear | TikTok, LinkedIn and Microsoft (Bing) ad calls, and Google ads clicked in apps, are labelled by platform |
Tagged links not always recognised as paid | Links with utm_medium=cpc show the platform plus "Paid", for example "Bing Paid" |
AI tools lumped in with referrals | Visits from ChatGPT and similar AI tools appear as their own source |
No setup is needed; the tracking script updates automatically. The improvements apply to new calls only. Some calls will still show as Direct when a browser hides the referrer and the link has no tracking code. When a link carries several ad tracking codes, the first match wins, checked in the order Google, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn.
More customers now discover businesses by asking AI assistants for recommendations. Seeing calls from ChatGPT-style referrals as a separate source shows whether your business is being recommended in AI answers. See how to get cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
Number pool calls can now ring up to six team members simultaneously, each on the device they prefer: web, mobile app, desk phone or their own phone number.
Open the number pool's settings and turn on Ring Incoming Call to selected Users.
Choose up to six team members.
Set each person's preferred device under Settings → My Staff → Edit user → Call & voicemail → Default channel for ring all.
This closes a gap for sales teams: tracked calls no longer go to a single line where they can be missed.

Size the pool for your traffic. Too few numbers means sessions share numbers and attribution gets muddy.
Tag every ad link with UTM parameters using a consistent naming guide. See lead source attribution.
Keep your main number in Google Business Profile citations for consistency, and use pools on the website.
Register numbers for A2P if you will text from them.
Connect calls to outcomes: move callers into pipeline stages so you can report cost per booked job, not just cost per call.
Calls by source and campaign, weekly
First-time callers vs repeat callers
Answered vs missed calls by source
Booked appointments and revenue from called leads
Does call tracking hurt local SEO? Using dynamic numbers on your website while keeping a consistent main number in business listings is a common approach that protects listing consistency.
Will past calls get the new labels? No. Only new calls receive the improved source labels.
Why do some calls still show as Direct? When a browser hides where the visitor came from and the link has no tracking code, the source cannot be identified.
How many numbers do I need in a pool? It depends on concurrent website visitors; ask for a sizing estimate based on your traffic.
