If you cannot say which campaign produced your last ten customers, you are guessing with your marketing budget. Lead source attribution connects each lead, and eventually each sale, to the channel and campaign that produced it. With it, you can cut spend that only generates clicks and invest more in channels that generate revenue.
Ad platforms report their own conversions and often overlap, so totals exceed reality.
Phone calls are not tracked, so a large share of leads shows as "unknown".
Forms do not capture UTM parameters, so source data never reaches the CRM.
Sales outcomes stay in the CRM and are never sent back to ad platforms.
Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
UTM parameters | Tags added to URLs (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term) that identify where a visitor came from |
GCLID | Google Ads click identifier, used to match conversions back to ad clicks |
fbclid | A Meta click identifier added to links from Facebook and Instagram |
First-touch attribution | Credits the first interaction that brought the lead |
Last-touch attribution | Credits the final interaction before conversion |
Multi-touch attribution | Shares credit across several interactions |
Offline conversion | A sale or qualified lead recorded in the CRM and sent back to the ad platform |
Create a simple naming guide and use it everywhere:
utm_source: the platform, such as google, facebook, newsletter
utm_medium: the channel type, such as cpc, paid_social, email, organic_social
utm_campaign: a consistent campaign name, such as spring_whitening_2026
Use lowercase only and never change names mid-campaign. Inconsistent tags split your reports into meaningless fragments.
Make sure every form and booking calendar stores UTM values, click IDs and the landing page on the contact record. GoHighLevel records attribution data such as first and latest source for forms, surveys and calendars on its own funnels and websites; for external sites, pass UTM values into hidden fields or use the tracking script.
For many local businesses, calls are the biggest lead source. Use dynamic number insertion or separate tracking numbers per channel, so a call from a Google Ad shows a different number than a call from your organic listing. Record the source on the contact automatically.

Attribution only becomes powerful when it reaches money. Move leads through pipeline stages, record deal values and mark opportunities as won or lost. Then you can report:
Cost per lead by channel
Cost per booked appointment
Close rate by source
Revenue and return on ad spend by campaign
Ad algorithms optimise towards the conversions you report. If you only report form fills, they find more form-fillers, not buyers. Send qualified leads and sales back using Google Ads offline conversion imports and the Meta Conversions API. This trains the platforms to find customers who resemble your real buyers.
For most small and mid-sized businesses, start by recording both first-touch and last-touch source. First touch shows which channels create demand; last touch shows which channels close it. Multi-touch models are useful at higher budgets but need clean data first.
Browser privacy features, ad blockers and consent rules limit tracking. Use a cookie consent banner where required, rely on first-party data in your CRM and favour server-side tools such as the Conversions API, which are more resilient than browser pixels alone.
What are UTM parameters? They are tags added to the end of a URL that tell analytics tools and your CRM which source, medium and campaign sent the visitor.
Why does my CRM show many leads as unknown source? Usually because forms do not capture UTMs, calls are untracked or leads are entered manually without a source field.
Is first-touch or last-touch attribution better? Neither is complete on its own. Recording both gives a more balanced view.
Do I need call tracking? If phone calls are a significant share of your leads, yes. Otherwise your best channels may look like poor performers.
